Hi ! Two points :
It is hard to find a given file on Commons. I completly agree on this. It is notoriously hard to find pictures that corresponds to two or more criterias (paintings + women + 17th-century), thus the creation of cross categories such as "17th-century paintings of women". Even when you know what you are looking for, if you don't enter the file name, you might be lost.
This being said, I fail to see how removing Category:Nus dans un paysage by Roger de la Fresnaye will make the painting more available. Will people be able to find it from Category:1910 paintings ? I really doubt that. Moreover, removing the categories means maintenance is harder, because each category relevant to the painting must be added on three files (and "soon" more, when we'll have other files associated to the painting), instead of just the category, the day there will be Wikipedia articles / a Wikidata entry about the painting, only one of the files of Commons will be visible instead of all, etc.
To conclude : removing the category does not resolve the problem of pictures being hard to find and creates new ones.Léna (talk) 13:37, 2 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hallo Oursana. Mache etwas Ordnung in Art metacategories.

Category:Landscape paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, Arles 1888 which is already a very specific category, has a lot of paintings in it. It can be hard to find what you look for when you have the same painting four times, under different names, in different langages, and with different colors. I know that a list of titles in English is not the ideal solution, what's why I put galleries in categories, such as Category:Landscape paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the Van Gogh Museum (work in progress) : each painting is shown exactly once, with a link with other versions of the same painting.
There is a wikidata element wikidata:Q4103022 for the painting, from which it is interesting to have a commons Category.
There are two wikipedia articles, wikipedia:ru:Валуны и дуб and [[[:wikipedia:hy:Գլաքարեր և կաղնի]], from which it is more interesting to link to the category of the painting as well.
Hi, thanks for cat renaming. This is extremely necessary to have a little chance to trace back the paintings.
I do not think that Category:Landscape paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, Arles 1888 is too big to find back three sorted files. I know that a list of titles in English is not the ideal solution, this is exactly the point, nobody opens 34 subcats, mostly with incorrect names, to find the paintings. When we have nearly as much subcats as files, this is no advantage. Creating galleries for all cats is no solution and isn't done.
It is not at all necessary or advantageous for wikidata nor for the articles to have a cat, with no other information than three files of the same painting. Consider the wikdata project
It's really hard for Vincent van Gogh because there is no "right" name, since the paintings were given names after his death :(
Well, I do it, but it's a lot of work, and I work on a way to automate this / have it a part of regular mediawiki code.
To illustrate further the problem, I just found another file representing the same painting, which was just in two general categories here. Subcategories of Category:Paintings by Vincent van Gogh is a huge mess which I try to clean the best way I can. I think that a category per artwork + general subcategories (by year, genre, museum, serie, and place of creation) with galeries would be an acceptable solution. If you have a better idea I would gladly read it :) Léna (talk) 10:09, 30 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Moin!
:)--Oursana (talk) 17:30, 13 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Was this a mistake perhaps? You are right that Category:Great Fish Market is a stupid name for that category. Did you perhaps forget that you wanted to rename the category and messed up the cleanup then? The edits are somewhat funny. I hope you are fine by the way and thanks a lot for your efforts on the Alte Pinakothek file categorization! Cheers, --Marsupium (talk) 14:59, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Concerning your revert: What is the problem? I try to keep record of the comments I leave. From time to time I get back to them. As you didn't reply I left a note mainly for myself so that I don't have to recall what has happened if I stumble upon my unanswered comment in the future. Whatever the problem with leaving a follow-up comment might be, I'd be delighted not to be addressed in revert comments in a language people might use to rebuke their misbehaving toddlers. If you see any specific misdemeanor of mine that you think gave you reason for this please tell me. Thank you, --Marsupium (talk) 20:07, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
2.Warum hast Du mich eigentlich in Englisch angeschrieben?

I disagree with your belief that a category for a painting must have a name that includes the name of the painter. The discussion that you linked to in your edit summary talks about it being a good idea, but does not establish that it is required. However, even if you do want the artist name included, the way to do that is to rename the category for the painting, not to remove files from the category. I'm also puzzled about why you seem to care only about File:Jan Brueghel the Elder-Great Fish market.jpg and not the other files in Category:Great Fish Market.
I'm going to put that file back in the category for that specific painting. Please do not remove it again. If you do, I will ask for help from the admins. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:12, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
But there is general agreement to use it international. see my links in the summary. Cranach is German so English is not the argument. You should have noticed my and others work renaming the cats. Your discussion would habe been appreciated. Iwoulkd be very thankful if you could help to revert your edits, because I do not have that time. Hallo Oursana, ich such schon länger jemanden der mir mal erklärt, was dieser Zahlenkey bei Commons hinter den Bildern bedeutet. Was genau bewirkt deine Änderung?
If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators.

Hello Oursana,
I completely understand being upset with this. Same Admim threatened to block me three times for "vandalism" in a few days last June, the last one said the next time I would be blocked. After discussion at "User problems", the decision was he could not block me because he was "involved" and that my edits were not "vandalism". (It was also said he has a history of such "victims".) So he followed me and reverted little edits almost daily for over a year. It is not worth changing anything regarding his uploads, even the categories, as they are "owned" by him and he will retaliate. Kindly regards, --Krok6kola (talk) 14:10, 16 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I noticed that you uploaded a file using the name File:Messkirch Mocking of Christ.jpg. A file by this name already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you.
For more information, please see Commons:Overwriting files.

I changed that because the category name doesn't indicate that it's for religious paintings. Even if all the paintings in the category are religious ones, this category should state so if it's going under a religious painting parent category. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:02, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
It is the first time I read this argument. You could also argue, you can only say Religious paintings by , when there are also other paintings as well. Years ago I was reverted for this. Most cats we use are not stated in the subcat, e.g.many cats do not mention the artist ( not ok) nor material nor year and you can use e.e. cats for oil paintings or certain periods.
I think I would not habe divided the small Paintings in the Fränkische Galerie, because now the overview ist damaged. But what one would never not do - as for me: a cat for only one painting - mostly is not regulated on commons. So please restrain from reverts as long as other users edits are acceptable and no mistakes. And please restrain from to many detailed cats to maintain the overview of the paintings.--Oursana (talk) 17:14, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Oursana. You have removed the sortkey from this file File:August Fischer - Huse ved en sø - 1879.png. Could you please respect that in Denmark we generally use the chronology of the paintings as sortorder. It makes sense to us, because titles may vary according to language used, but the chronology is unchanged. Please revert your edit - and others of the same kind (if there are any). Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 16:58, 8 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi Rsteen, as you know commons is an international project and as far as I know we do not have special sorting rules. It does not make sense to sort by date, which often is not known or are unknown to commons users. To keep images from Italy and other places together is more useful.
Hi again. We can agree that Commons is an international project and there are no recommended sorting rules for things like artworks. Then you write that you sort by "painter and English title and place". That seems a good idea when you work with items where nobody has made other guidelines. But when it comes to works by Danish artists, those of us who use a lot of time to upload and organize their works, have made the discussion (in Danish) about how to organize and sort their works. You could not know about that, and therefore you have now been told - politely - how we work, and you have been asked to revert your edits.
The general guideline is to sort the paintings by date. This is done, so you can follow the artist's progress from early works to maturity, and discover important changes in the choice of motifs and colour schemes. Undated works go last, they are often less important. Category:Paintings by August Fischer would be a good example of this.
For some of the more important painters, we organize their works by three dimensions: 1) When was the work made? 2) What is the subject? 3) Where is the work now? Category:Paintings by Anna Ancher would be an example of this.
As you say one cannot find the mysterious sorting rules for Danish paintings. I am contributor at commons for many years and I always respect commons rules and practice. And you are right, what I do not know, I cannot consider. In your place I would work on this and get general acceptance. But consider the project with every country#s own rules....I never heard of this. I came to Fischer because of a Hamburg motif and there is almost no chance to come back again. And again, the file I started with had no sort key at all. And I hope this is the friendly end of this conversationOursana (talk) 08:39, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well, during our discussions, we looked at "best practices" in other countries. The Netherlands are very good at organizing their paintings so we took some clues from them. See for instance Category:Marine paintings by Ludolf Bakhuizen. Since you do not plan to return to Fischer, I hope you will not be offended that I restore the sortorder - where possible. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 11:01, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
But not all in this cat. see [:File:Lille PdBA Backhuyzen marine.JPG]], File:Ludolf backhuizen, marina con mare mosso, 1675-1700 ca.jpg. The problem is, if you do not sort all, there is no system. I am very familiar with the Netherlands on commons, and they do not sort all by date. It is the handwriting of one (much appreciated) user long ago, when there were less files, and not for all sort of categories. I sometimes state the sort key on the category or its discussion page - unfortunately without result. Sometimes by sorting by date you separate same motifs. With Kaufmann you could perhaps consider sorting different countries (motif) perhaps on a gallery page, to offer a different overview from the category, imagine me just looking for the Hamburg painting. A sorting by date - and this painting is not dated - hardly gives me a chance to find it. In the case of Fischer I do not mind, but I would be glad if I could show you some arguments against sorting by date. And I did not want to disturb with my sortingOursana (talk) 11:27, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Category:Paintings of Apollo flaying Marsyas by Ribera. Hi. Thank you for your comment on this page, I completely agree with you. But on the opposite, I don't understand this revision : where it have been decided that there is "no valid Category naming without painter's name" ? Is there any community decision about I wouldn't know ? A great number of paintings doesn't have any known author or there is a controversy about it, like this painting. I don't think a totaly hypothetical name would be useful to name a category about an artwork : in that case which name using ? Perugino ? Aloigi ? Anonymous (but it's not that case). A good categorization could be good enough. Thank you. Mel22 (talk) 12:37, 17 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
The painter is Aloigi following Musée Condée and enWP; all three files have the artist's name. But I do not see any need to create a special cat only for this painting and will revert the other files too. It is common policy to use a painter's name in the cat. When I started at commons I had to learn this by reverts too, which was always agreed too by admins and which clearly makes sense. I always change cats without painter's name with the support of admins. look here. I hope you can agree with me Oursana (talk) 13:06, 17 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

--Wuselig (talk) 17:54, 24 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Danke! Da ist doch schon mal was.
TheRunnerUp (talk) 11:54, 10 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
PS: viele sinnvoller wäre es, die Fotos in einer Kategorie nach Erstellungsdatum zu sortieren, damit ich sehe, was aktuelle und was historische Fotos sind. --TheRunnerUp (talk) 12:11, 10 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Was meinst Du mit alphabetisch sortiert?
Unter oben 67 + 79 hast Du Diskussionsbeiträge hierzu, lange her.
Oursana (talk) 12:35, 10 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
1. Ich will keine Reihenfolge von a nach z, sondern von Talstation über Freie Strecke nach Bergstation und Blick von der Bergstation, sodass nicht erst lange überlegen muss, was a oder x oder 005. bedeutet.

Wuselig (talk) 17:53, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
so oft haben sie doch nicht gewechselt. Also das wäre toll, wenn Du Ziff. 2/3 wieder hinzufügen könntest. Genau diese Altarzusammenhänge meinte ich. Oursana (talk) 03:01, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Raymond06:12, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please do not delete the descriptions of the paintings in Russian. They are needed and used in the Russian Wikipedia. Your May edits broke my work! Villarreal9 (talk) 07:04, 12 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Link. Before your removing description was: "«Пейзаж с Христом и апостолами на Тивериадском озере» (нид. Now: "Christus und die Apostel am See Genezareth (Bruegel 1553)". Can you see the difference? Does this description in Russian break something in the file? If not, why are you deleting it? It performs its function, but Wikidata does not perform this function! Please fix everything broken by you. --Villarreal9 (talk) 17:18, 12 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
The information you give does not belong to the "description", see tl:artwork|doc, the title, material, dimensions and so on are given seperately in the tl. The tl is international, so that not every language gives double information at various places of the file.
Please accept the international handling and rules of commons. It is not possible to give extra double information in all almost 300 wp languages. Please accept this, there is no privilege for Russian language. Commons and wikidata help to organize the file description with good overview. So far you seem to be the only one not accepting this. You should use another way for ru :wp like other language versions do. The file description has been without double information in ru and vi for years, please restrain and keep the files as they have been for years. All language versions are also restricted to wikidata and tl:artwork--Oursana (talk) 17:30, 12 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Oursana. Apparently the Danish users on Commons are sorting Danish paintings completely wrong. Well, that would be the case since you have taken upon you to correct our sorting conventions, like here: File:Anton Melbye - Et skib i høj sø ved solnedgang - 1847.jpg. The sortkey for Oil marine paintings by Anton Melbye used to be "1847", but you deleted that sortkey. Why? Could you please point me to the help section that sets a standard for sortkeys of this kind, because I am unable to find it. One of the reasons that the keys of all the paintings in the category were set to the production year (if one exists) is that it is much easier to see which works are in the category, if a new one arrives. Many of the marine paintings (and landscapes) tend to look alike, and a year will help us to find them and distinguish between them. Your method of using a title has been rejected here in Denmark, because titles can be in English, in Danish or in any other language, making searches unnessesarily complex. Furthermore, auction houses will from time to time slap diffenerent titles to the same painting, when it reappears for sale. Another reason for the chronological model is that it gives us a good insight into the developement of the painter's style over time. So please, where is it decided that your way of doing things is the right one? Cheers Rsteen (talk) 01:57, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hallo Rsteen, in general on commons paintings are sorted after the painter's name as users are looking after this more that after year, furthermore often the dates for the paintings are lacking. I was not aware of the soecial sortkey for Oil marine paintings and I could as well ask you, where your way of sorting is decided.
Looking at your mentioned file, I only changed the sortkey of the Oil marine .. harmonizing the sortkeyover all cats, but I reverted this. It makes perhaps sense in a painters's cat as the oil marine titles do not much differ
A general sortkey over all would be transparent, easier to handle...
I am always concerned about the user finding a file/painting, and general sorting is in English as the cats names are. I do not knwow about special danish sorting. You are the only user reacting--Oursana (talk) 02:34, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi again. Thanks for your swift answer and your latest edit. There are only four Danes contributing regularly to the works of Danish painters, so we found it convenient to reach a consensus about how to sort the paintings. When it comes to categories that comprise many artists, like paintings in a museum, we chose to use the artists' names followed by the dates. When dealing with works from one specific painter, we have two guidelines, the general one is to use the date, but for painters who have categories with portrait paintings, we sort those portraits according to the person depicted. All of this is done for two reasons. The first is, that it should be as easy as possible to find the works and the second is to help with the study of how a painter's style may have developed through his or her lifetime. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 03:02, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Oursana,
I do not appreciate you marking a file that I had explicitely kept in a deletion request as a supposed "duplicate". I tend to notice such things. Please do not do it again. --Rosenzweigτ10:41, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
There were two different reasons for deletion requests, which I first had not all realized. So I do not see any mistakes in my second request and thank you for your support. As commons is steadily growing with more technical possibilities we should delete very bad quality images and in any case duplicates following commons policies.--Oursana (talk) 11:50, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
For years I tell you to name categories properly with the artist's name or place, and have deleted them, especially by creating atomizing unnecessary cats for 1 artwork with only 1-3 files. You should remember our discussions. I took the files to the supercats and forgot to have the cat deleted and thank you to remind me. So please rename the cat properly and not enigmatic, but better leave it in the few file of Sculptures in musée Fenaille. I think I did not complete the supercats. The artist's name is sometimes missing in your van Gogh cats, so one in Beach scenes by Vincent van Gogh. Category names should be in English commons:Categories#Category names. From you as Admin I expect specially that you follow commons policy. You certainly remember that all Louvre cats had to be renamed in the past. If you do not agree and change the name, which I cannot understand, I will start a cfd.
If there are other documents that invalidate what follows, I'll change my mind, no problem.
For English, the rule is "Category names should generally be in English (see Commons:Language policy). However, there are exceptions such as some proper names, biological taxa and names for which the non-English name is most commonly used in the English language (or there is no evidence of usage of an English-language version)" ; for this sculpture the only evidence of English usage is in the widata item. For me it's not even since it's internal to Wikimedia projects. In that, many artworks don't have English names, even in the Louvre.
For 1 artwork with only 1-3 files, I don't see any policy on this. I think for artworks it's better to have "one artwork - one category", but I can understand why you would see things differently.
For artwork categories needing their artist in their name, I again don't see any policy on this, and also I fail to see the relevance here since the creator is anonymous.
When the artist is anonymous one should mention the place in the category name. What sense does it make to mention an inventory nummer without mentioning the museum as well. That is against all common sense.
For English naming I am not with you, it is not only for wikidata and this is not internal, users have more difficulties to recognize French naming than English. And commons text is expressively clear and does not allow your interpretation.
"one artwork - one category" misunderstands every category system, by this you cannot find the artworks, as they are hidden in blue links and texts inspite of pictures. When you even give an enigmatic category name, the user cannot find the artwork. So what is wrong with the categorization I did for the three files? For me it is sufficient and even better.
commons states a necessity of creating categories
It is rarely necessary to create a new category
To create a new category:
Do a thorough search, to be sure there isn't an existing category that will serve the purpose.
So your 1 artwork 1 category is not supported by commons policy and common sense. It would kill the system.
We better discuss in broader context or have cfd. Up to now all my deletion requests for incorrect category names had been done by admins without refuse.Oursana (talk) 13:25, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

--Oursana (talk) 11:03, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Category:Fantin-Latour,_Henri_-_A_Studio_at_Batignolles has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

Oursana (talk) 13:58, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
--Sitacuisses (talk) 17:51, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oursana (talk) 18:01, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
--Sitacuisses (talk) 18:13, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oursana (talk) 20:43, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dear friend, I am sorry I had to revet your edits, but I find these old, un-updated galleries so annoying and useless. Often I visit Commons from Wikipedia articles, and the link brings me to these useless galleries, that were almost never updates in the last 15 year, while the category has widely improved since, it has lots of quality files, and listed with sub-categories they are so easy to navigate. I am ok with galleries that show extensively and argument, helping to navigate, but when it is just a random 2006 selection of the few files available at that time, not sorted, not ordinated, I really this it is much more usefull a redirect instead. Don'y you think? So unless you are creating such quality galleries, I really please you to help me get rid of the trash-gallery ones. Thank you for your help and consideration. Francesco, I am very sorry, but I do not agree. You are invited to add files. And you know, that your beheaviour is not conform on commons. You may not simply delete. You have to do a DR, which will not suceed. As for Lucca della Robbia, it is also other editors work, so you have no right to delete without discussion. This is vandalism and you know this. The galleries you reverted today "never updates in the last 15 year" almost never updates is pure nonsense here and false argument. So I hope you consider your doing. I will revert and ask for help by admins. By this you prevent galleries which are necessary and take time. This is a project to work together, not the way you do. You can imagine that there are also many things from your work that annoy other people, also me. I ask you for more tolerance. This is a hobby and if it gets unfriendly, I have to stop. I try to see your point, but I have no time to work specially on a gallery, this is done by regular improvements, this is within the scope of the project.--Oursana (talk) 19:16, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Oursana, agreed with the English name. What i don't agree is to not create a category to save disk space (or for whatever reason) if a category would only contain one (or a few) files. A category gives the advantage to directly link to WD. So a user who uploads new files can easily add the painting category instead of copy all the describing category again and again. And it is much more logical to have the describing categories at the painting category because they describe the painting as an abstract concept and not the photo which just depicts a painting. Btw, the same holds for person categories, building categories etc. When you argue from the point of the user-/webinterface which may look nicer without many subcategories you must see that the main purpose of categories is to structure the files and give additional information. Only a few people like us really browse through it. --Arnd 🇺🇦 (talk) 08:18, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page. Blanked categories end up on Special:UncategorizedCategories, which is largely handled by non-admins who cannot delete the categories in question.
If you believe the content does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, you may replace the speedy deletion tag with a regular deletion request (if the content has not been deleted) or request undeletion (if the content has already been deleted).

Hello, Oursana. I saw that you reverted some changes I made, and asked for deletion of Category:Scenes from the Story of the Argonauts MET 09.136.1. The files indicate that "Scenes from the Story of the Argonauts" is the title of the painting, and the museum's web page also give it as the title. That's why I created the category. I'd be interested in why you think it isn't the title.
However, if we shouldn't be using tha title, you probably want to follow up with these items:
Remove "Scenes from the Story of the Argonauts" from the title field of the files, and maybe put it in the description if it is a good description
Clean up the Wikidata item, d:Q20167108: remove the images, and maybe even ask for the item to be deleted.

Hello, Oursana. I noticed that you emptied Category:Friedrich III (1463–1525), the Wise, Elector of Saxony (MET 46.179.1) and asked for speedy deletion. Would you please explain why you did this? As far as I can tell, there were several files in the category. If there is a problem with the name (as implied by the note "incorrect cat naming without artist's name|moved to supercats" on the speedy request), it can be renamed. For now, I am going to contest the speedy request by removing the request from the category, even though it is currently empty. -- Auntof6 (talk) 14:53, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
no, because You must use the speedy request for empty categories, I do this for years and you are the first changing it against the rules. Please consider the rulesOursana (talk) 15:01, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Then my question is, why did you empty the category? I will repopulate it if you insist, but I thought I could wait until I heard back from you. -- Auntof6 (talk) 15:02, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
You seem not to consider standard category naming which in the arts consists of the artist's name to give necessary information and to be disambigious. For years I am looking after this and get support from adminsOursana (talk) 15:05, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
If there is a problem with the category name, it can be renamed. However, you just depopulated it instead. If you tell me the name it should be, I can move the category to that name. To me, that's a better solution than eliminating the category. -- Auntof6 (talk) 15:08, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Second thing is that I do not think that categories for every painting are useful. There are here about 40 similar versions which are better in one category to keep a good overview. I would apreciate if you could consider this. And I thank you for your solutionOursana (talk) 15:16, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I remember you saying before that you don't think it's good to have a category for every painting. I see your point, but I disagree with it. I think it's helpful because you don't have to individually categorize every file that goes in the category. If all images of a painting (or anything else for that matter) aren't together in a category, then they end up not categorized the same and people can't find them all. Do you know of any policy or guideline about this? --Auntof6 (talk) 15:22, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hallo Oursana, Du hast meine Kategorie fälschlich den Painting cycles of Saint Benedict of Nursia zugeordnet.

Wäre sie da nicht auch besser in Category:Cycles of the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia aufgehoben? Wie siehst Du das? Mit Gruß --Hermetiker (talk) 01:48, 19 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

The software automatically sort files by name, the fact that them could be sorted with a sortkey does not mean they should. Sorting files one by one following a personal criteria has no consensus, and ultimately is useless, as everyday thousands of files are uploaded. If some files in a category have a sortkey all new files would be sorted automatically after them (or before them) damaging the usability of categories and the accessibility of the files themseves. Normally if you want to separate some files in a same category you would create a subcategory. --Phyrexianɸ16:56, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

VG --An-d (talk) 09:55, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I could give you many examples. But it is very easy. You can always ask me. I want to tell you that there are some users who oppose strictly against this and even refuse to discuss. But the majority accepts or likes it, I even get many thanks. So I'm very thankful for your interest and participation and just want to let you know that there could come rude reactions, so you are prepared. Some discussions you can read here. I prefer greater categories and not these 1 or 2 files minicats, where you don't see anything. And with bigger cats in my opinion sorting is very helpful to help out of the mess. Hallo Oursana,
Du hast ja die Category Category:History of Park Sanssouci angelegt und Category:Black and white photographs of Park Sanssouci dort einsortiert.
Daher würde ich wohl eher "History of..." of "Black and white photographs of ..." im allgemeinen nicht vermischen, and auch in diesem Fall auch lieber Category:History of Park Sanssouci aus Category:Black and white photographs of Park Sanssouci entfernen.
Oder was denkst du?

Please note that snow is considered independent of winter. Snow is a year-round phenomenon, depending on the region. Even in Potsdam, snow is quite possible in autumn and spring. Lukas Beck (talk) 11:08, 23 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
no, Snow in Potsdam, Germany is subclass of winter. Please start a cfd or discus it on category discs to get a broad acceptance. As you can notice from the photos concerned they are all taken in winter, 90 % of snow falls in winter so we should not make decisions and categories for exemptions but for general nature. Further argument: What is winter. I think we all understand winter not only in terms of 12 months/4 = dec-feb but generally about oct-nov until march. And perhaps we do not even get 7 or 10 days snow. As I have no time for this dicussion please discuss it as proposed above and do not be irritated when I will not answer again. Third notice to cats snow/winter. The other way around not all winter photos show snow and as they are extra cats for snow, for me it important to separate the snowy photos from the pure winter photos. 4th idea: we can name the winter cats to Winter half-years in Potsdam, or you could name the monthly terms expressively. In case you are not convinced, of ourse I propose that you move this discussion to the discs or cfd --Oursana (talk) 11:51, 23 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Oursana. Category:Tomb of Giovanni Pecci is another case where you created a new category instead of moving the existing one. Please stop doing this because we lose the edit history. This is not the first time I have brought this up. I think the most recent time was on 26 November, although that post has been removed. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:15, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6: Just to make it clear, different from WP there is no protective copyright on the history of that pages. Therefore you are the only one with this idea. I don't believe I am the only person with this idea. The policy at Commons:Rename a category describes the process as a move, not as creating a new category with the new name. Please use that process instead of creating new categories. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:38, 2 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Also Ziel war hier meine 3 passend einzusortieren

Hi, IMO this category and its subcategories are useless. There are potentially 10,000 paintings by Paul Klee, all in the public domain now. It is much more useful to have categories by year. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:03, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
IMHO at the moment in contrary cats by year are useless. A category system is a sorting system, that means only as many cats as necessary otherwise the aim of sorting is useless. The three cats by decade which I created have appropriate size, while your 18 cats by year have not. They are unnecessary miniature cats which often containing only 1 file, an absurdum for a category system. Perhaps I underestimate the number of files in future, how do you count 10000?. Users searching for a painting have to open only three cats, otherwise they have to open 18 cats with only 1 file i many cases, which is very annoying. Hopefully you can see that there is also this approach to creating cats. Regards, --Oursana (talk) 20:23, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

2024 Picture of the Year:Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows using a mixture of cow urine and ash as a ritualistic and protective practice in a temporary cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.
For artworks it is common praxis to use the artist's name in the category, so that users who do not know the artwork can recognize the artist immediately. So these 2 words are not useless but very helpful --Oursana (talk) 20:08, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, it is NOT! I notice that there are currently many complaints about your headstrong way of working. This approach is not helpful and seems to be disrupting the project. I therefore ask you not to modify any categories without prior consultation. On Wiki-NL, there is also the rule: “when in doubt, do not proceed.” It is noticeable that you repeatedly ignore this guideline. thank you. Carolus (talk) 20:09, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Besides, like Mentioned ABOVE (I hope you read the remarks) We have lost AGAIN, the whole history of this Cat. Because you did not follow correct procedure. You have been warned before, right? Carolus (talk) 20:15, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Enlish would be easier. Do you find this sorting by wildenstein number useles? it is anyway for me better than no sorting within cats, or sorting by year, because dating of Monet creation is sometimes a bit uncertain. Similarly I would be happy to hear from you about cration of cats per painting. What is the rule? A cat can be created whenver there are 4 similar pics of same painting. Useless? And what is the rule for category naming? english or original title name, ie French ? --Zen 38 (talk) 08:57, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am a friend of cleaning up categories with multiple versions of the same subject by putting these images into own categories. This has a new disadvantage that we thereby reduce the visibility of these paintings. And also the sorting will than be by the categories names.
@Oursana and I love to disagree at times and still we can cooperate well at other times. Have a look at Category:Unicorn exhibition 2025/26 and the corresponding gallery Unicorn: The Mythical Beast in Art. And Oursana have you seen the impunity of somebody creating a new category for the exhibition as it moved to Paris: Category:Licornes !. What do you think Oursana, will we end up with multiple Wikidata Items? Not just wikidata:Q137039444, but one for each exhibition and one for each catalogue edition?
As for language conventions, I am no friend of anglicization at all means. I prefer the language of origin, in case of artwork that is mostly the current locationof a work. If it is relevant enough it will have a Wikidata entry, and this helps with internationalization and also with the many aliases we encounter with artworks. Wuselig (talk) 11:06, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Zen 38: , @Wuselig: : commons:Categories#Category names:Naming convention is English. There are no rules for category sizes. With Wuselig and me you just meet friends of opposite opinions, whereas Wuselig very often creates cats for only 1 file. Please do not follow.
As for sorting, sorry, for me sorting by inventory number is useless, and I am completely with you, that sorting after year is useless, I prefer sorting „Monet, Claude; title", which of course some problems with the title. And I agree completely with you and oppose Wuselig: no sorting in big cats in the arts is a no go - Wuseligs solution are minicats. But one has to realize that there is no no sorting, because than sorting is by arbitrary filenames. The very best is the perfect filename. We never sort by inventory number beside catalog, not with van Gogh, not with Piet Mondrian. And as we have all the Wildenstein cats, we do not need more sorting after inventory number. Zen38, if we cannot get an agreement we have to discuss it on a greater scale within commonsOursana (talk) 10:17, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
As mentioned in German above, I don't believe that sorting within categories makes any sense at all. One user like @Oursana might have a pretty good plan and start sorting at a specific point in time. but any uploader without knowledge of this sorting algorithm will just upload regardless and bomb the system. Using cat-a-lot to break up categories that have become to large will also break the system. As long as the initiator of such a system is alive and active they may try to save and repair what's possible, but without curation the endeavor will be fruitless.
I consider lists and galleries as the best way to systematically display orders. With one single good image. But where to put all the images we have accumulated of a single item? We can put them into ever narrower categories. By the way, if I create one-item categories it is usually in preparation for future additions. Additions already on my hard-drive. I prepare their uploads by searching for possible Wikidataentries for the artwork, and of course previous uploads. And if there are any, I create a category into which I can place my upload. So you get a category for the special exhibition: Category:Pekka Halonen. An Ode to Finland. You get a Category:Paintings by Pekka Halonen by title, and these namecategories, like Category:After the Music Lesson (Pekka Halonen) will hopefully be linked to a Wikidata entry like Q139556167. And in the Reasonator Display to the special exhibition you will find all paintings with a WD-item in the exhibition history. Thats how I like to curate my uploads. Wuselig (talk) 22:25, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Zen 38: There was an answer of yours, which I cannot find back, will you please copy that here. There are no rules about the sorting, one can discuss and decide on the category discussion. Now there seems to be that arbitrary numbers are not welcome. So I would prefer sorting by name and title to Wildenstein inventory number. At least there must be transparency. And as I said there are enough galleries with Wildenstein numbers. And users cannot trace back the files via Wildensteinnumber. Beside this is unusual and premier way of sortung. As we do not seem to agree I will discuss it on the Commons talk:Categories.Oursana (talk) 16:08, 23 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi :-) I saw edits like this, and I don't understand the reasoning behind it. Numbering the pictures in a category basing on what? And if someone adds another picture in the category that must be sorted as well, maybe in place of another existing, needing a shift of all the others? I think it's arbitrary and a waste of time. And from I can read in this page, I'm not the only one not agreeing with this scheme, so maybe you should reconsider it. --Superchilum(talk to me!)21:12, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand your behaviour. I expressed my doubts about your edits, and you keep doing them without even considering me. I did not expect that. Are you really in a collaborative project? --Superchilum(talk to me!)06:50, 9 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
Thank you, I reverted, but please be more careful wrong Qnumber for Besancon and wrong cat for Barbari, seems you work too quicklyOursana (talk) 00:34, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
--Wuselig (talk) 14:02, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Raymond (talk) 17:27, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Danke für Eure Antworten--Oursana (talk) 19:11, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Oursana,
I don't understand why you emptied the common category I made a year ago for these 2 paintings, commenting "incorrect cat name without artist's name". We can change the name to "Category:Wedding portraits of Dr. Johannes Cuspinian and Anna Putsch by Lucas Cranach I" if you want Cranach's name in it. Henxter (talk) 14:12, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes @Henxter: , if you really feel the need for this cat, we apreciate the artist's name, as you can see the subcats and normally the cats have, to realize the artist and an artwork when the cat is used in other contexts.--Oursana (talk) 14:27, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful.
This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions.
Again you are too late, besides without a link I will ignore and delete your outdated message
I feel haunted. since when is omission of license copyright violence, especially during only some minutes. AGF. Be sure that I know more about copyright than you.--Oursana (talk) 14:11, 20 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
at 10:52 I made the upload and forgot license tagging
at 11:05 I repaired it
at 12:55 you made your outdated überflüssig aggressiv edit
beside - 13 minutes for the license - I made an extremely well prepared upload with all information including the source, by this everybody obviously beside you could see, that the file was under PD-art tag. --Oursana (talk) 19:05, 20 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry you are right, but the main thing is that you spend your time unnecessarily almost 2 hours after repair. I close this discussion nowOursana (talk) 23:28, 20 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
